The keyboard just stopped working one day recently. When the machine is booting up it says "Keyboard Error" and it gives options to press f10 and f1 and so on. When he first called Compaq support they said that there was some sort of update on disk that promised to send that would fix the problem.

Windows button on keyboard
While playing around with gthumb, my keyboard suddenly stopped working. I can login to KDE and the keyboard's fine. I can login as another gnome user and the keyboard's fine. But in gnome, nothing works. Not even a terminal. Also the default desktop will not load at all for this user.

Nothing in the kernel configs seemed to be at fault, even borrowing the old config for the new Unfortunately all the X keyboard model, variant, layout, symbol, etc. information that used to live in /etc/X11, seems to have evaporated somewhere;
